Mr. Pablo Cue, President of the New York
Chapter of the the Organization of Chinese Americans, invited the WFASI Chorus
and Dance Group to perform a dance or two and sing a number or two at the
Asian Cultural Day at Kensico Dam on May 31, 2003.
The group is hard at work at learning and
re-learning the Itik-itik, the Tinikling and the Pandango sa llaw in hopes of
presenting the dances at the said festival. However, the group is
presently comprised of only a handful of dances and is in dire need of
more. To date, the dances include Etchie Angos, Sumi Cue, Portia Fagel,
Matt and Linda Fontanilla, Linda Mejia, Bless and Rene Punzalan, Fanny Suarez,
Joan Torres and Pearl Winthal.
Almost the same number of people comprise the Chorus. In addition to the
above mentioned members, the other singers are Naty Espiritu, Ramon
Francisco and Rady Mejia. At the last practice, Tita Dequina played the piano
and it is hoped that she will return for the next practice.
The group has been practicing, "Bayan Ko" and "Biituing Marikit"
and will perfect both songs in no time. In addition to the OCA invitation, PS 12
of Yonkers also invited WFASI to join in the school's multi-cultural
presentation on June 4. This matter will be taken up at the meeting scheduled on
April 6.
The practices are fun. They are times to learn new things, times to re-learn
things we thought we have forgotten. As it is always said, it is like riding a
bike - you never really forget. They are times to make new friends and times
to renew friendships.
The practices are held at the Nodine Hill Comunity Center at Fleming Field.
Pearl's husband, Louie Winthal, is the president of the Nodine Hill-Fleming
Field Neighborhood Association and was instrumental in getting the Center
built.
